west ham vs chelsea full guide
West Ham’s Emerson Palmieri pegs back Chelsea.
Right now, Chelsea cannot purchase a victory. When Joo Félix's new team took an early lead, the big spenders thought they were on the right track. However, they soon lost their way. The hegemony waned. Momentum slowed down. Emerson Palmieri's equalizing goal for West Ham was almost a gift, and the rest of the game was a reminder of Chelsea's uncertain future as their new players spent the rest of the game crossing their fingers and trying unsuccessfully to score the winning goal.
Graham Potter is having trouble figuring out the best course of action for his bloated team because of this. Félix, in particular, showed glimpses of promise, but they were fleeting. To put it mildly, this is still a work in progress. West Ham, on the other hand, were entitled to argue that they fully deserved a point, which leaves them unbeaten in four games. However, Chelsea now has two wins from their last 13 games, and they did not pose any threat in the second half.
Five of Chelsea's new players were on the field as a result of their January spending, and their decision to select seven players under the age of 24 for the first time in a Premier League match added to the sense of change. A glimpse of the future could be seen here, with Todd Boehly on the sidelines. The combination of Kai Havertz, Félix, and Mykhaylo Mudryk made Potter's team immediately a far more engaging proposition, and for the first time in a while, there was a lighter feel to Chelsea. There was also a sharper edge in the final third for the first time in a while.
Félix's return from his three-match ban during his debut last month was undoubtedly beneficial. The Atlético Madrid loanee was at the center of every Chelsea move, playing off Havertz and having the freedom to go wherever he pleased. When Félix ran through and beat Lukasz Fabianski in the ninth minute, there was a bright idea behind every touch, menace behind every pass, and composure as well. However, West Ham were saved by a tight offside call.
There was a precedent. West Ham stood off while Enzo Fernández was running midfield. Lucas Paquetá was forced to make way for Tomas Soucek because of a shoulder injury. David Moyes wailed in his technical area alone at the timidity of his team. West Ham's only complaint when they fell behind was Craig Pawson's decision not to penalize Mudryk for his tackle on Jarrod Bowen, who was still lying on the ground when Félix peeled off Nayef Aguerd and volleyed Fernández's teasing cross past Fabianski. West Ham were too slow on the ball.
The initial reward for all those millions was this: a first goal for Félix in Chelsea colors and a first assist for Fernández. It's easy to see why Potter's celebrations were so passionate. Once more, he left Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang at home after taking the big call to drop Mason Mount. Chelsea were significantly more fluent, and the management was decisive; Havertz's goal was saved by a minor slip of the eye, making it 2-0.
West Ham, on the other hand, fought back, just as they had against Newcastle. Every time Bowen passed Marc Cucurella, he gave them hope. Kepa Arrizabalaga was forced to save at his near post as Michail Antonio fought off Benoît Badiashile and Thiago Silva with a lot of effort.
Two minutes later, West Ham were level. They raised themselves and recycled the ball to the right, allowing Vladimir Coufal to cross. Reece James was unable to react after Bowen's flick caused problems with the right wingback's delivery before Emerson, who left Chelsea last summer, arrived to bundle in the equalizer.
Now it was a genuine derby with spirited challenges and Declan Rice stifling numerous Chelsea attacks. Noni Madueke came in from the right and shot at the far post with an arrow. Félix's free kick put Fabianski to the test, and he came close once more.
